Zesty Cup Monthly Subscription | Tea Review

Tea is an essential staple in life. It's comforting, soothing and a quick-fix solution to life's stresses. I always start my day off with a cup or 2 of caffeine-fuelled 'builder's tea' but when I want to wind down after a hard day's work and access that often forgotten zone of 'Mindfulness' I need an alternative...

Sourced Box Review | January

This month's sourced box has very pretty, appealing packaged products. I was hoping for some sourced box own brand snacks (we had one in December) but alas there isn't one in this month's box. There is a bonus sachet of Aduna Moringa Green Superleaf powder and a Teapigs voucher. Huzzah, some savoury snacks are included too this month...oh and some porridge :S

Apple & Raspberry Fruit Jerky
~Snact~

Not very much supplied in the pack but a nice little snack. Think thicker, chewier candy belts without the sugar! These are packed full of flavour and would be great for children too with it's chewy texture. Looking at the website there are other flavours too: apple, blueberry and banana and apple and mango. A great on the go sweet snack, I'd buy these again!

Cacao Orange Raw Energy Bites
~Squirrel Sisters~

The Squirrel (or Tyrell) Sister's etho's is that 'in treating yourself you can treat your health'. They have a range of more healthy raw energy bars which sound delish and are stocked in wholefoods, boots and lots of other places (I might know of if I ate better). In the pack are two chunky finger bites of chocolatey orange goodness. The texture is like sticky, thick cake with a bit of crunch and is a substantially satisfying, sweet snack. Not quite the Terry's chocolate orange we all tucked into at xmas but this snack gives you a nice choc orange kick, now we are all clean-eating again (she lies). I like the decorative coco pattern packaging and the little tray the snack comes in- very cute!

Peppermint Tea
~ Teapigs~

Tea Pigs have a vast range of teas: English Breakfast, Green, Chai, Fruit to name a few and even popcorn! This is a gourmet product: the tea comes in silk pyramids and is on a higher price point (a pack of 15 bags will set you back £4) than bog standard PG tips (aah good ol' PG). You can taste a difference between the teapigs high quality tea (or qualiTEA that saves on the vocal chords) and your cheapo supermarket brands. This particular tea has a mild peppermint scent and fresh feeling taste. I'm not a fan of peppermint tea- I find the flavour generally tastes of grass, and unfortunately I have yet to be converted. This tea is palatable but not something I would choose- even if I had bad indigestion I'd opt for green tea or a Rennie antacid tablet! I'll give it a point for the packaging; put anything in a patterned brown paper bag and I'll be excited.

Nim's Beetroot & Parsnip Veg Crisps

I love a veggie crisp and I now realise that I like them for their salt. Nim's crisps unsurprisingly have zilch salt. They are 100% veg: 50% beetroot, 50% Parsnip to be exact. I'd agree with the online description they do taste...'earthy'. Earthy in an edible but not overly exciting way. I'd like to try the other combos in the range: tomato & cucumber and Pepper & Courgette as these could be less predictable in flavour- perhaps beetroot and parsnip are over done on the veg crisp market. Also £1.25 for a bag!? Overall a bit bland and the packagings trying to win over kids- but they won't be fooled!

Moringa Bar with Mango and Cashews
~Aduna~

Eat this with your eyes closed and it's fruity, tropical and satisfying. Eat this with your eyes open and it's less appetising. It's a filling snack packed full of texture. Taste-wise its sweet, tangy (there's a hint of ginger) but has an aftertaste of that 'healthy food/farm shop smell'.

Quinoa Porridge
with coconut, cashew & beetroot
~Loula's Superfood~

It's pink!!!!
I quite liked this, I was expecting the worst: a savoury mushy porridge. But! as porridge goes, it was palatable. I think it was a placebo effect my brain thinking 'mm pink mush' rather than 'eww regurgitated food mush'. This time I used Almond milk instead of semi-skimmed milk which may have given it a sweeter taste. Due to the seeds and superfoods and cashews included in the mix it gave it more a bit of crunch which porridge needs. I'd (tentatively) try this again.

Cacao, goji berries & pistachios Popcorn
~Nina's ~

Love Love Love these- as you can tell from the photo there wasn't much left after I'd stuffed them all! I love that theres the berries and nuts mixed in- a great way to fill up without noticing your eating them as you pour a large mouthful in! The cacao gives the yummy chocolaty sweetness and the pistachios give it some savoury crunch too. To top it off the packaging is gorgeous! So pretty. Would love to try these again!

Chilli & Garlic Olives
~Olove~

A portion-controlled snack of pitted black olives in a vinaigrette of Chilli & Garlic. I couldn't taste any chilli or garlic but it was still a delicious snack!

Pure Mylk Artisan Raw Chocolate
~Raw Halo~

This is tasty and a good substitute for chocolate if your going dairy-free. It's rich with a mild bitter taste with finely ground cashews that give it a subtle crunch (I've used crunch too much in this post). It's a little misleading in terms of packaging: purple and the name 'Pure Mylk' is associated with milk chocolate but of course it contains no milk, and in the absence of milk it looses that creamy taste that makes a good chocolate- this product is basically plain chocolate so perhaps should be packaged in this way. I also notice that 35g of (more delicious) Cadbury's chocolate (ie: a freddo) contains less calories and fat than this product. Although I suppose a freddo has alot more sugar and ain't vegan...potato, potato.

Matcha Green Tea Mylk
~Rebel Kitchen~

Still in the fridge, waiting for it's moment!

Sourced Box Review | December

Sourced Box is a monthly subscription box of healthy natural snacks. The snacks vary but many include superfoods and/or are vegan-friendly, glutan-free, dairy-free etc so are good alternatives (in theory) to calorific yumminess. The snacks are sourced from different companies so there is a great selection of different types of snacks which appealed to me most. Unlike other snack boxes (eg Graze) the products are picked for you which is a shame as it limits the personalisation and taste-tailoring of the box. The monthly fee is £18.95. This is quite expensive in comparison to most sub boxes however when I totted up the price of each individual treat it basically totalled this amount if you add on company profit and p&p. I love that you get voucher codes from some of the products too to buy more. I was excited but a little under-whelmed by my first box (November) but wanted to extend my subscription to give it the benefit of the doubt and December SourcedBox is so much better!

~December~

This box is crammed full of christmasified treats! Inside it's really inviting except there doesn't appear to be any savoury snacks- but I'm not too fussed about this having such a big Sweet Tooth. The little sleeve on the package is decorative and cute making the box a little more special!
(Yes, I'm easily impressed by little touches like this) In my attempt to save it- was going to use it for something crafty- Leon my kitten has mauled it to pieces so he must have appreciated it too! Righto lets go and check out the contents:

Nakd~ Toffee Treat Nibbles

Small squishy balls, these do taste a little like toffee but there is zilch toffee in the ingrediants!?! Their basically made from dates. These would be great to sprinkle onto ice cream. I ate them straight outta the packet and they did not last long- will definitely buy these again.

Sourced Box~ Christmas Spice Chocolate Bar

SourcedBox's first branded snack and it's a good'un. Zesty with a hint of spice this dark chocolate bar contains raisins that give in a slight nice chewy texture to the chocolate bar. The chocolate is rich and pleasant. It's very much christmas in chocolate form.

Jake's Boost~ Cocoa Boost Snack Pot

If you like peanut butter the Cacao Boost is a similar type of texture- a bit gritty and thick. It's not overall chocolaty tasting. The air-dried orange 'spoons' have the texture of crisps and are fun to eat.  This is a nice idea, it's just not particularly tasty. I used the Raw Ecstasy Cacao spread from the November box instead of the supplied spread which worked better with the dried orange spoons.

Bluebird Tea Co. ~ Gingerbread Chai Tea

A very well-rounded flavourful rooibos; like a rooibos with a bit more punch! Gingerbready flavours and Chai but not too spicy or bitter. Lovely festive wintery drink served in a silk bag (like Teapig tea). I drank mine without milk so I got the full flavour (plus my milk's gone off) but it'd definitely go with milk if you want a more creamy chai drink. It takes me a while to get used to herbal teas but I'll be buying this again- which must be a good sign.
Edit: In fact using the voucher code supplied in the box I have bought a batch of this tea!

Be Mindful~ Dark Chocolate Chia Pudding

[Still to Try- will update!]

Livia's Kitchen~ Raw Millionaire Bites

A bit dry and clawring (is that the word I mean?) but this has defined layers of different textures pretty similar to the hallowed traditional millionaire shortbread (Oh my the one's at my uni were divine!) It has a oat base in place of shortbread, a squidgy mild salted caramel flavoured date filling which is a good altnerative for caramel but in no way a replacement (!) Topped off with a thin, hard layer of dark chocolate which gives the whole thing a bit of bite! It's also nice to have in 3 bite sized pieces so in theory might last a bit longer than a full bar (mine didn't!). I like the papery package too, gives a nice handmade quality to it.

Saf Raw~ Christmas Pudding Balls

The packaging makes it easy to store and keeps the snack fresh. I really did try to like these but they have an unpleasant waxy texture. That and the the stodgy almost savoury winter spiced flavour made the snack taste like I was eating my festive spiced candle from Next! Perhaps if I drown it in brandy cream...nope now just a boozy candle. Oh dear.

The Beginnings~ Gingerbread Cookies

O me O my these are delish! There is however a bit of coconut flakiness in the texture but I'll look past this seeing as the snack is full of flavour and have a perfect balance of sweet and spice.

The Protein Ball Co. ~ Goji and Coconut Balls

These are good- not too sweet, not too bitty, a great 'I-want-to-eat-something-but-I'm not actually-hungry' snack. The flavours are very subtle but it's still pretty tasty. There's only 6 in a pack but maybe that's a good thing as these are quite moorish! There a great mid-morning snack to keep you going and are vegan and also dairy, gluten and soy free!!

Chi~ Chocolate Coconut Milk

A pleasant taste but nothing too special. It has quite a watery consistency and taste. Not particularly very coconutty (which is a good thing) it's just sort of slightly chocolatey. It's vegan, vegetarian, kosher, glutan and dairy free so I guess gives you that milky chocolate fix if your any of those. The packaging doesn't really go well with the contents in says 'daring tropical drink' which...it ain't.

Well, having neglected my emails...looks like I'm signed up for January's Box (sorry bank account) but hey I've really enjoyed this box and have high hopes for the next one!

~November~

For my first box I was a little under-whelmed. You get a good selection of products and range of sweet and savoury snacks as well as a drink but I found most treats were not very appetising. It's personal taste of course and I have extended my subscription to the December box to give it the benefit of the doubt!

The Good'uns

Brontie & Co. ~Superfood Hot Chocolate

I had to get used to this one, but overall it is like a warm hug in a mug. Very autumnal/christmassy with it's hints of Winter Spice. There's not a strong chocolate taste and the more chocolate I put in from the sachet it just tasted powdery. Despite this I would drink it again, it would go well with one of those German christmas biscuits 'Lebkuchen'- although I doubt those are vegan-friendly. I wonder if it tastes better with almond milk?

Spare Fruit~ Apple Crisps

These soft freeze-dried apple slices are really tasty-a nice tangy apple taste. The company, 'Spare Fruit' use surplus fruit from farms which is a great idea- preventing waste food. The only ingrediants listed are '100% Kentish Apples' so an all round wholesome and natural snack I'd reach for again- might be more fun for children to snack on too if they don't like crunchy raw textures.

Raw Ecstasy
Raw Chocolate and Activated Almond Spread

With the consistency and texture of almond butter but the taste of rich chocolate! This is goood and tastes delish on apple slices.

RawBite ~ Apple and Cinnamon Bar

This is a wholesome bar packed full of flavour with a nutty texture. I'll be buying these again.

Lovechock~Raw Chocolate Bar in Almond/Fig

This was yummy! A rich chocolate stuffed with crunchy fruit and nut with an after taste of fig biscuits.

The err... hmm... no.

Raw Health
Spirulina and Orange Energy Ball

These were a little odd mainly because they were chocolaty but tasted of Jelly Tots.

Munchy Seeds ~ Sesame/Omega Sprinkles

I love Munchy Seed's Honey Seeds so was eager to pour these down my throat except unbeknownst to me, this pack is as savoury as you can get and my god-not good especially when your expecting something sweet on your palette! Might be better mixed in to cous-cous or a salad.

Ape Snacks~ Slightly Peppered Coconut Curls

These looked like pencil sharpenings! I liked the idea of these...but I'm not a big fan of coconut flakes. The savoury taste of pepper was pretty good but let's just say they won't be a replacement for crisps...

Stoats ~ Multigrain Porridge

I don't like porridge so I can't really review this fairly but I did give it a try. The multigrains and seeds gave it a bit of bite which improved the porridge texture. It had a plain nutty flavour that was palatable with a swirl of honey. I would probably purchase this again if I had the urge to eat porridge but alas I don't think I will ever fit it into my diet!

Halo Coco~ Coconut Milk & Vanilla Drink

Still in my fridge! Will update it here when I take the coconuty vanilla plunge.

Day 67 #The100dayproject

'Snacking Reinvented'- Graze.

#100daysofhappys

Today in the post I was sent my 2-weekly Graze box and it looks a good'un! Olives, flapjack, my fave cake- Carrot Cake (deconstructed) and a dried berry combo. Nom.

Graze are a 'mail-order' company that send you yummy sweet and savory portioned snacks. There is a huge selection to choose from online and each box can be tailored to your own likes and dislikes. There are options to 'bin'- they will not send you that product (good riddance Beef Jerky!), 'try', 'send soon', 'like' and 'love'- they will send you the snack again in a future box.

-Image-

Being an online company makes it super convenient, you can track your boxes, make changes or amendments to your order, get loyalty rewards or try different one-off snack products in the extensive ranges.

Boxes are £3.99 each for 4 different snack portions, a sharing box with 5 medium sized bags (20 portions) is £15. I would reccomend choosing what goes in the sharing box as I bought the Best of British box and only liked one of the bags (sad times).

However many of the snacks are yummilicious and being a snack fiend who likes to finish the packet the controlled portion size helps with limiting what you eat.
Also good to keep in the car or bag for a panic-snack.

Click the links below, your first regular box is free (win!)
